About this class

This classical Pilates Mat class is designed for true beginners new to Pilates, as well as advanced students who wish to deepen their “powerhouse,” or core center, with a strong review of Pilates' fundamental principles. The focus will be on establishing the connection between the powerhouse and the rest of the body while staying true to Joseph Pilates’ original intentions of moving with breath, rhythm, and flow. This classical sequence of exercises progresses clients from the beginning to intermediate series. Three goals of stretch, strength, and control are incorporated to intensify the powerhouse connection, challenging everybody at every level. Students should wear form fitting clothes, e.g. yoga pants, leggings, tank tops, etc. Students should be barefoot.

How to prepare

Bring a photo ID for check-in. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can easily dance in and see your alignment and movement. Recommended Footwear: Contemporary, Modern Rhythms: barefoot. Fusion Rhythms, Hip Hop, House Dance: supportive sneakers Tap: Tap Shoes Ballet: Ballet Shoes Flamenco: Flamenco Shoes or Hard-soled shoes with a thick-heel. No open-toe sandals allowed. No black/rubber soled shoes allowed in studios.

How to get there

Check in at 351 Shotwell. It is between 17th and 18th street, NOT on the corner.

This class is very relaxing and centering. A kind of oasis after a busy day or a great way to start a weekend. Michael was great and does an awesome job of explaining the movements and adjusting your body. Note: If you're looking for a sweaty, get-your-heart-rate up Pilates class, this one is not it.
