The Dos & Don’ts of Healthy Summer Hair

Even though we love the way beachy hair looks, the odds are stacked against our hair during the summer months. Frizz is at its peak. Salt, sand and chlorine will do damage to even the healthiest of strands. Sun can bleach the color and dry out the hair shaft.

So how do we balance being out in the weather we love and maintaining a healthy head of hair? Besides hiding under a hat for the duration of the summer, there are some easy ways to maintain the health of the hair shaft all summer long. Try these five simple tricks and you won’t have to chop your hair come fall.

Find a hair SPF

If you use SPF all over your face and body, why wouldn’t you want to do the same for your hair? If you’re spending hundreds of dollars on hair color, you might as well maintain its integrity with a hair SPF. Find a formula that protects against the sun’s rays as well as heat styling.

Embrace braids (or buns)

Avoid heat styling in the summer and your hair will thank you. The key to great summer hair is embracing some fabulous updos that you can create in mere minutes. A simple braid or bun not only gets your hair out of your face, but it can protect strands from heat or sun damage.

Dry shampoo is your friend

When it’s hot and sticky out, the temptation is there to over-wash your hair. Over-washing will only compound the stripping of the hair that occurs when you’re swimming in a pool or at the beach.
