Trial Fraud: Eligibility, Fraud Detection, and How ClassPass Protects Your Business

Last updated: February 20, 2026

When you list your business on ClassPass, you’re trusting us with more than bookings. You’re trusting us to protect your inventory, your revenue, and your time.

That’s why we take ClassPass trial fraud seriously. ClassPass only wins when our partners win, and preventing users from redeeming multiple trials is a critical part of that commitment. From strict eligibility rules to real-time fraud detection, we’ve built multiple layers of protection to make sure trials drive discovery, not misuse.

Below, we break down how ClassPass trial eligibility works, how we detect and stop multiple trial redemptions, and what partners can do if something doesn’t look right.

What is the ClassPass trial program?

The ClassPass trial program is an introductory experience for eligible new and returning users, allowing them to take one free class per studio before committing to a full membership. Depending on location, ClassPass offers either a free trial or a paid trial. In both cases, eligible users receive one complimentary visit per business during their trial period.

The program is designed to reduce barriers to entry and encourage discovery of new fitness and wellness experiences, making it easier for first-time visitors to step through your doors. Participation in the trial program is required for all ClassPass fitness partners.

Who qualifies for the ClassPass trial and how is eligibility enforced?

ClassPass enforces clear, strict eligibility rules for all trial programs. Only users who meet these criteria can access a trial:

  • First-time ClassPass users starting their initial free or paid trial
  • Returning users who’ve been away from the ClassPass platform for a minimum amount of time.

During the trial, each eligible user can book one free class per business. Any additional visits require credits, just like bookings made by paid ClassPass members.

Eligibility is enforced through a combination of account-level and behavioral checks. We don’t rely on a single signal. Instead, we evaluate patterns across sign-ups, devices, payment methods, and booking behavior to determine whether a trial is valid.

This approach helps prevent issues like:

  • Multiple accounts created by the same individual
  • Trial hopping across locations or businesses
  • Repeated trial redemptions at the same studio
If a user does not meet eligibility requirements, they are blocked from accessing the trial, even if they attempt to create a new account.

How does ClassPass detect and stop trial fraud in real time?

Preventing trial fraud isn’t static. To further safeguard against repeat trial redemption, we’ve invested heavily in machine learning and real-time monitoring. As of May 2025, we upgraded our fraud detection system to run up to 48x faster than our prior system*.

Our systems look for signals like:

  • Unusual account creation patterns
  • Repeat booking behavior across linked accounts
  • Attempts to bypass eligibility rules

When suspicious behavior is detected, intervention may include blocking bookings, removing trial access, or flagging accounts for deeper review. This real-time approach helps protect partners from lost inventory and ensures trials remain a discovery tool, not a loophole.

Inventory safeguards that protect your most valuable spots

Trial fraud prevention isn’t just about stopping bad actors. It’s also about protecting your best inventory.

That’s where SmartSpot comes in. SmartSpot is designed to ensure that ClassPass trial users only book true excess capacity, even during trial periods. It uses machine learning to determine how many spots ClassPass should make available for each class, based on a business’s past attendance data, real-time availability, and what we think ClassPass can fill.

What that means for your business:

  • Your most popular classes or appointments stay protected for direct members
  • Trial users are funneled into spots that would have otherwise gone unfilled
  • You maintain control over your highest-value inventory

SmartSpot works quietly in the background, but it plays a major role in making sure trial participation supports growth without taking away from your direct business.

How can partners report suspected trial fraud and what happens next?

Even with strong systems in place, your insight matters. You know your business best, and if something feels off, we want to hear about it.

Partners can report suspected trial fraud directly through the partner dashboard. The process is straightforward, and reports go directly to our review teams.

Helpful details to include when reporting suspected fraud are:

  • Dates and times of the suspicious bookings
  • Usernames or booking IDs
  • Notes on repeat behavior or unusual patterns

Once a report is submitted, our team reviews the account using internal tools and data signals. If we find evidence that the user has fraudulently redeemed multiple trials, we take action. This may include revoking trial access, restricting accounts, or applying additional safeguards.

ClassPass’s commitment to protecting your business

The ClassPass trial program is built to drive discovery while safeguarding your inventory, revenue, and time. With strict eligibility rules, real-time fraud detection, SmartSpot inventory controls, and clear reporting tools, we’re continuously improving how we prevent trial abuse and support our partners. As we evolve these protections, our goal stays the same: help you reach new customers with confidence and turn first-time visits into long-term relationships.

Frequently asked questions about ClassPass trial fraud and protections

What protections are in place to protect ClassPass partners from trial fraud?

To protect ClassPass partners from trial abuse, ClassPass uses multiple layers of safeguards. These include strict trial eligibility rules, real-time fraud detection, and direct partner reporting tools. Together, these systems help prevent repeat trial misuse while protecting partner inventory and revenue.

When can a returning user access a ClassPass trial again?

A returning user can only access a free ClassPass trial again after a minimum 12-month period away from the ClassPass platform and if they meet all current eligibility requirements. Not all returning users qualify, and ClassPass actively blocks repeat trial misuse.

Why is my business part of the ClassPass trial program?

Your business is part of the ClassPass trial program to help introduce new customers with low risk. Trials are at the heart of how ClassPass connects fitness partners to new audiences. In fact, as of December 2024, 49% of ClassPass users had never tried group fitness before joining. For many of these users, walking into a studio for the first time can feel intimidating. Offering a trial, often at no cost, helps reduce hesitation and creates a more welcoming first step.

Importantly, trials focus on discovery, not discounting. With inventory safeguards like SmartSpot, trial bookings use excess capacity while preserving availability for your direct members. You’re not giving away a class to someone who would have paid full price. Instead, you’re introducing your space to someone brand new and creating the opportunity to turn that first visit into long-term loyalty.
