What is yoga?

Yoga is an ancient rhythmic movement practice originating in India thousands of years ago. It is now a popular form of physical activity that strings together a series of poses to create a routine. These poses are called “asanas” and have a specific emotional and physical focus. There are many different types of yoga, from vinyasa to ashtanga to restorative yoga to basic yoga to Kundalini yoga.

How can I learn yoga? How do I get started?

Anybody can learn yoga. If you’re interested in beginning your yoga practice, start with researching different yoga poses and different styles of yoga. Each type of yoga (more than eight different kinds) focuses on a different style, some are faster paced than others and may not be what you’re looking for. Vinyasa can be fast paced and challenging, whereas restorative yoga is slower paced and focused on relaxation.
Once you’ve finished your research, you can get started doing yoga by taking a yoga class. Yoga is a welcoming activity suitable for a variety of fitness levels, so if you’ve never even tried to touch your toes you can sign up for a yoga class and jump right in.

How old is yoga? Where did yoga come from?

Yoga originated in northern India thousands of years ago. The first mentions of yoga occurred in ancient texts called the Rig Veda 5,000 years ago. The Vedas are sacred Sanskrit texts that became the foundation for yoga and Hinduism.

How often should you do yoga?

You should do yoga as often as you enjoy, there is no set number of required days. But if you are looking to increase your flexibility and mobility you should do yoga at least once a week.

How much are yoga classes?
