What It’s Like to Work Out in Australia vs. the U.S.

ClassPass came to Australia last year – and let us tell you, it’s been quite the whirlwind! And while we like to think we’re ahead of the game in the United States in terms of fitness – Aussies definitely have us beat. From amazing healthy food trends and mostly outdoor classes (lucky!) working out in one of our five Australian cities will definitely push you further than you thought possible.

If you happen to be visiting Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide or Brisbane soon, here’s what you can expect when you try one of their hundreds of classes, straight from a local Aussie:

Aussies love to workout outdoors

We are blessed with beautiful weather here in Australia, so we love to workout outside. Whether it be lifting kettle bells, squatting or boxing, you’ll find plenty of outdoor offerings so that you can soak up the morning sun and water views before you hit the office.

Bondi Beach in particular is home to bootcamps both on the sand and in the parks. You’ll be surrounded by people running, swimming, surfing and walking all around you. The occasional downpour doesn’t stop us either! Some of our favorites for next time you want to train on Bondi Beach? Try LeanBeanFitness, Evolution to Wellbeing or Team One Fitness.

Aussie workouts are evolving

Although many Australians still prefer to take a traditional Pilates class, studios are beginning to offer more and more dynamic options to ensure they offer a complete package for members, with a mixture of strength, cardio and high-intensity training along with balancing warm-ups, cool-downs and savasana.

Check out Studio PP for HIIT Pilates classes, as well as Barre Body (in three states!) for a full-body workout with a cheeky savasana at the end of class. Even yoga classes in Australia are not always the traditional flow, with Urban Yoga in Sydney offering a totally 21st century experience.

Aussie workouts are getting tougher

Tough obstacle races like Tough Mudder and the Spartan series are booming in popularity. Aussies love a challenge, and these races inspire us to push our limits and work out with a team. Train like you’re a tough Aussie at these studios: Serotonin, Melbourne Altitude Training and Movement Co. You’ll feel the burn for sure!

Meditation is growing

More Australians are recognizing the benefits of taking time out to meditate, even if just once per week. Meditation has been widely recognized for helping to reduce stress and anxiety, and now our local studios are incorporating classes into their schedules to ensure that Australians can learn and develop an effective meditation practice. Check out Bodhi & Ride in Melbourne, DharmaShala in Sydney and Yogaworx in Perth.

It’s all about the barre

Barre is taking Australia by storm. Barre is the fastest-growing genre of fitness in Australia, with new studios opening weekly in our major cities. Haven’t tried a barre class? Expect a fusion of dance, yoga and Pilates with a few light weights and some serious burn action. Channel your inner ballerina with these studios: Barre Body across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane; Aleenta Barre in Adelaide; Xtend Barre in four locations across Melbourne; Fabulous Pilates and Yoga in Brisbane; and @theBarre in Sydney.
