Self-Care Practices for Fitness and Wellness Professionals

Last updated: January 12, 2026

As a fitness or wellness professional, you make a living helping others live their healthiest lives. You pour your heart and energy into supporting your clients, which can be equally joyful and depleting (if you know, you know). Refilling your own self-care cup is critical.

In this post, we’ve compiled a list of simple self-care practices to help you focus on you. Use them as inspiration to prioritize yourself in whatever ways feel best.

1. Set a check-in

Stress is unavoidable—but letting it build up doesn’t have to be. Organize a daily reminder to turn inward and reflect on how you’re feeling without judgment. Take five minutes for a journal exercise when you wake up or set a midday alarm to pause for a few deep breaths. Even a moment or two of self-reflection can have a huge impact on the rest of your day.

2. Let breath in

Breathing can be an incredible tool to de-stress and give yourself a bit of care. It's easy, free and can be done just about anywhere. If you're game to try mindful meditation, explore YouTube, guided audio sessions or podcasts. Or, try a few of these breathing exercises:

  • Inhale for a count of three, exhale for a count of four
  • Try the 4-7-8 method, a sure-fire way to relax
  • Take a big breath in through your nose, exhale through the mouth

3. Pick up a hobby

We’re often consumed with work, commitments, and obligations, which leaves very little time for anything else. As a result, you have to be intentional about putting energy into a hobby that brings you joy. While you may love fitness, try something that gets you out of your regular routine. Spend time doing art (coloring books count!), work your brain with a puzzle, or try a new recipe.

4. Dare to disconnect

Set a regular time each day that is technology-free—no phone, no laptop, no TV. Being overly connected increases anxiety and the feeling of always been “on.” Disconnecting may feel uncomfortable at first (this is a sign you really need some time offline) but it gets easier with practice.

5. Head outdoors

Getting outside is another simple and free way to practice self-care. It’s also a great way to shake negative thoughts and change your mindset. What your ‘outside’ looks like isn’t important—a walk in nature, a stroll through your backyard, sitting on an outdoor balcony, or walking a few blocks on the sidewalk are all great options. Simply use your senses to be present with what’s around you.

6. Find your community

In today's fast-paced world, the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a community is often overlooked. However, connection is everything. Schedule time to spend with friends and family however you can—a walk outside, a coffee date, a home-cooked meal. Investing in community is essential for a happier, more balanced life.

Of course, self-care is deeply individual; what may be rejuvenating for one person may not resonate with someone else. So, while we can’t tell you exactly what activities, practices, or habits will best support your personal well-being, we can tell you that self-care is more important than ever. Here’s to showing up for yourself so you can keep showing up for others.
