Your Head-to-Toe Guide: Where to Use Essential Oils Topically

Essential oils are most popularly used in beauty products, like face creams, or in a burner for aromatherapy. They’re known for their aromatic properties, but they’re much more complex when you start looking at them as healing remedies. Essential oils can help sinus infections and headaches, and they can also help you de-stress and digest.

You can find essential oils in just about any grocery or health food store, and they can be mixed together to create an alluring and healing scent. A key point to remember is that pure essential oils are very concentrated and should be diluted if they’re going to be applied topically. Mix a drop or two of an essential oil with one of your favorite carrier oils, such as jojoba, coconut or olive oil, before applying to the skin. 

From the top of your head to the tips of your toes, there’s not a bad place on the body to use essential oils. There are, however, some extremely effective at-home remedies that require just a couple drops applied strategically on the body. Check out these four key places to apply essential oils and start healing your body the natural way.  


Probably the most well-known area to put essential oils, the temples are a key pressure point. Lavender, peppermint and lemon essential oils are all known to help relax and de-stress. This is a great place to dab diluted essential oils any time of day, but it’s known to be particularly handy at night when you need to shut off your brain to get a good night’s sleep.  


Using an essential oil burner or popping a couple drops in a diffuser are really popular ways to clear up breathing problems. However, applying essential oils topically to the chest can work wonders if you have any sort of congestion or cough. Using a eucalyptus or juniper essential oil will loosen up the chest and have your breathing clearer in no time.


Consider applying essential oils to the stomach when you’re having digestive issues. You’d be shocked at how quickly you can soothe a sore tummy with a little peppermint essential oil. Just as it’s calming when used on the temples, it can calm your stomach if you’re nervous, nauseous or having indigestion.


Last but certainly not least, use essential oils on your feet for an incredibly effective at-home cure for a variety of issues. While rumors that the feet absorb essential oils faster than other parts of the body are widely disputed, there’s no doubt that the feet are full of various reflexology points. Take advantage of massaging essential oils onto reflexology points on the feet, like the inner arches for digestion. A popular essential oil for this area is tea tree because of its smell and antibacterial properties. Bergamot, oregano or rosemary are also popular on the feet because of their scents and miraculous healing effects.
