Remember when you resisted taking naps as a child? Most of us would pay cold hard cash now to be able to nap during the day, right? Though many of us would love to get some more sleep, how many hours do you really need — eight or seven?
Babies need 16 to 20 hours of sleep daily. Through childhood and adolescence, that number decreases. Experts say the amount of sleep needed is different for everyone and can vary between 7.5 to 8 hours a night, but some people need nine hours or more to feel rested. Not getting enough sleep can affect your alertness and cognitive performance during the day.
Recent studies have shown that you can actually sleep too much. In 2014, the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention funded a study to research the science of sleeping. Preliminary research shows that sleeping too much can be hazardous and that cognitive performance peaked with seven hours of sleep.
