This was Amy's first class at Barry's and although there was a hiccup or two during the run set, it was a pretty tough workout

    Barbell Basics

Class was pretty good and Mike is a great instructor. This was my second time taking Barbell Basics at The Yard. I liked that Mike planned a warm-up and a stretch on the turf. My first class was with Therese and we didn't do a warm-up or stretch after conditioning. The class takes place on the first floor in a small area off the entrance; you don't use the pods upstairs for this class. Both classes I've taken have consisted of 2 blocks, 2-3 exercises in each block, 4-5 rounds of each exercise. You don't actually use the barbells for the whole class; other equipment like dumbbells or kettlebells are also used. In the first class I took, we used the barbells for one exercise in each block (2 blocks), and in this class we used the barbells for only one of the total 4 exercises we did. The class size is small, so you get more personalized coaching, but the space only has 2 racks, so you share with other clients and have to wait your turn. I think it's a great class for beginners or people who like to take it slow, focus on form and workout in a small group. You choose your weight, so you can push yourself and get in a great workout even with the slower pace of the class (I personally don't like fast reps or fast paced lifting class. I like lifting heavy and doing fewer reps, working harder in a shorter amount of time. So I think the pace of class is perfect, even if you're not a beginner). But, I wouldn't call it a barbell class, since you're not using the barbells for each exercise. If you take these classes regularly, you'd get a taste of lifting with the barbells, but it's not the focus of the class, so it's a bit misleading. I would definitely recommend Mike's class, though, and I would take class again just not often.

    Pilates Mat

Karla was great! The classes are no bigger than 6 people so she's able to tailor to everyone's personal needs and does a wonderful job with adjustments and using props when needed. The class is more foundational, which I think is great if you need to focus on form, and movement with breath work - which I always find a refresher is needed every once in a while. The lower body work is always challenging to me in any case lol. Additionally, the workers at this gym are exceptionally nice to boot. My partner and I will definitely be coming back!!
