7 Beauty Rules Everyone Should Live By

Beauty trends come and go, but what are the secrets to timeless beauty? It doesn’t matter if this season’s glitter cat eye is not reasonable for your personal five-minute makeup routine. You don’t even have to wear makeup every day if that’s not in the cards for you. You can still be your most flawless, authentic self every day.

Your beauty routine can be effective and simple for the rest of your life if you just follow a few easy tricks. Most of them are common sense, yet people still manage to avoid them. Try sticking to these seven beauty commandments every day.

1. Drink Lots Of Water

All the moisturizer in the world can’t help you if you’re not drinking enough water. It’s vital for your physical health, and the effects of not getting enough water will show on your skin. Hydrated bodies = hydrated, plump skin.

2. Get More Sleep

It’s called “beauty sleep” for a reason. Just as your body regenerates at night, so does your skin. Puffiness in your under-eye area is often directly affected by lack of sleep, even if you’re using the most expensive eye cream on the market. Get 8+ hours of sleep at night and your skin will be glowing.

3. Always Wear Sunscreen

Pick a broad spectrum SPF, meaning that it protects from both UVA and UVB rays. To oversimplify: UVB rays are the type that cause sunburns, while UVA rays are the culprits behind aging skin and skin cancer. It’s imperative that you protect yourself against both, daily, because these rays can still reach you through cloud cover and glass windows.

4. Take Your Makeup Off

Going to bed with makeup and sunscreen on are major pore-cloggers. Constantly forgetting to take off your makeup will dull the skin over time and increase the need for exfoliation. Keeping makeup wipes next to your bed helps, but the real trick to healthy skin is making sure you get the makeup off completely. Try an oil-based cleanser to fully break down makeup and sunscreen before bed.

5. Antioxidants Are Your Friend

Whether it’s topically or internally (ideally, both), antioxidants are what keeps your skin healthy. Eating a diet rich in leafy greens and berries is a sure fire way to keep your body looking and feeling healthy. Topically, try a Vitamin C serum to help boost collagen production and even out skin tone.

6. Clean Your Makeup Brushes (properly)

For the same reason you should take your makeup off every night, regular cleansing of makeup brushes and sponges is crucial. Bacteria can live on unwashed brushes, particularly if they’re floating around in a dirty makeup bag day after day. Wash them with a gentle soap and dry them upside down to maintain their life expectancy. Drying brushes right-side-up can cause the glue in the handle to loosen, making your brush hairs fall out over time.

7. Make Your Own “Rules”

When it comes to beauty rules, there are some you just shouldn’t follow. Any beauty rules that make you feel “less than” someone else should be thrown out the window. Rules like “you can’t wear sparkle after a certain age” or “you must pick a warm hair color if you have a warm skin tone” are meant to be broken. Wear white after Labor Day. Combine a bold lip and a bold eye color. Don’t feel like contouring today? Then don’t! Make your own rules when it comes to beauty and set your own trends, as long as you make it fun and make it feel good.
