About this studio

ASCEND Pittsburgh is a bouldering-centric, indoor rock climbing gym with over 10,000 square feet of Walltopia-built climbing walls surrounded by Flashed flooring, all housed within a 27,000 square foot, second floor space in Pittsburgh’s Southside. Beyond bouldering, ASCEND offers roped climbing on a 24-foot-tall wall featuring 20 climbing stations with a mix of auto-belays and top-ropes. Cross-training is also a big part of ASCEND, so be sure to explore climbing-specific training and fitness equipment or drop in on one of our yoga or fitness classes. In addition to climbing, fitness and yoga, visitors can also enjoy use of child watch services, concessions, locker rooms with showers and numerous spaces to relax, study or work.

How to prepare

Athletic clothing is advised, but you’ll see climbers in jeans too. Climbing shoes are required, but if you don’t have your own pair, they are available to rent. Fitness and Yoga classes are group classes taught by an instructor. Show up at least 10 minutes early to get registered/oriented to the facility. Open Climbing is not a class, rather it is a time for you to explore our vast climbing terrain on your accord. There is no need show up exactly on time, so please just choose a time range that is close and we'll see you when you arrive!

How to get there

By Car Park in either of our two off-street lots or snag a street-spot (2-hour restrictions apply 12p-12a). Sign the register at ASCEND if you park at Rite Aid. By Bus Bus lines 48, 51, 54, 75, 81, 83 all pass within a handful of blocks of ASCEND, so regardless of where you are bussing from, you are covered! By Bike Our secure outdoor and indoor parking ensures your bike will be safe. Travel by street, or use the riverfront trail to get here from as far as DC (no joke!)

This is a one-on-one session, but its not indicated in the description. Id recommend only climbing or a yoga class instead.

Restore was so relaxing and zen. I felt great afterwards! Perfect for muscle recovery or for an active rest day.
Open Climbing
Super crowded, I definitely wouldnt recommend it for a weekend afternoon (we went Saturday at 2). You probably only need an hour unless youre really skilled so Id recommend arriving at 2:30 or so - it cleared out as people got tired.

This was a great class. It was challenging, but the instructor was extremely knowledgable and was always able to show modifications. Ascend is a really cool place.

Jo gave me a private lesson when I was the only one in class this week. She worked me hard, adjusted my poses thoughtfully, and encouraged me through the tough transitions. I will be coming back again and again!
