What You Need to Know About Athleisure Beauty Products

Who doesn’t love the athleisure clothing trend? You’re saying yoga pants are acceptable for brunch, work and the gym? Sign us up! Just like clothing, beauty is going through a gym revolution right now. But what exactly are gym beauty products and are they right for your skin?

“Athlesiure has been the fashion trend recently and has now made its way towards skincare products that are made for situations that require a little heat and sweat,” Dr. Julia Tzu, founder of Wall Street Dermatology, says. “Most of these skincare products are simply oil-free, noncomedogenic (non pore-clogging), and water-resistant formulations with a lighter consistency. This allows the product to stay on the skin through the sweat and decreases the probability of breakouts by not sticking to the pores.”

The benefits

One of the greatest upsides of this trend is the versatility that these products provide. “Just as athletic clothing can be worn during a workout or during a regular day, athleisure makeup is designed to provide the same versatility,” Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, says. “Athleisure beauty products provide hydration, protection and cosmetic coverage but are breathable and sweat-resistant, making them appropriate to use even when working out.”

Keep it light

If you’re hoping to hit the gym with a full face of makeup, make sure you’re using the right type of products. “You must be cautious what makeup you use during a workout because heavy products like some liquid foundations can block pores and lead to acne breakouts, can drip off the face, and can even lead to irritation and skin inflammation,” Dr. Zeichner says.

Experts suggest if you’re putting on makeup before your sweat sesh, you should start off with a clean slate. “Clean the skin with a clean, moist towelette or with some cleansing water first before applying any makeup, tinted moisturizer/sunscreen or powder,” Dr. Tzu says. “You do not want to trap any dirt, oil and sweat underneath the skin care products. This will lead to breakouts.”

Don’t get hung up on labels

If you’re hunting for athleisure beauty products, don’t feel like you have to look too far. In fact, some could already be in your bathroom cabinet. “While it’s convenient to simply purchase from the brands that specialize in this area, there are also products, such as waterproof mascara or water-resistant tinted sunscreen, that are not necessarily labeled as part of the athleisure movement, but have the same properties as an athleisure product,” Dr. Tzu says. “You just have to pay attention to the label and know what you’re buying.”
