Hot yoga is typically just yoga that is practiced in a heated room. Popular yoga brands such as Corepower have popularized this yoga trend, but it’s actually been around for thousands of years.
How hot is hot yoga?
Hot yoga is yoga that is done in a 90 to 105 degree room. Most Vinyasa-style hot yoga classes invite you to take breaks, step outside, and take water as needed. You’ll never have to wait for the teacher’s cue to take a break in child’s pose–you’re encouraged to take it whenever you need it.
Hot yoga benefits
Although it’s definitely challenging, there are a ton of benefits to practicing hot yoga. Turning up the heat can help increase your flexibility, reduce stress and soreness, increase your cardiovascular health, and benefit your mental health.
How to prepare for hot yoga
We cannot stress this enough: hydration is key. This is not an activity you want to try after a night out on the town. Even though you’ll be able to drink water during practice, you’ll need a strong base since you’ll definitely sweat faster than you can drink water.
If you tend to have low blood sugar or low blood pressure, but sure to eat something before you practice—it doesn’t have to (and shouldn’t) be a full meal, but something that will stick with you so you don’t get dizzy and weak while sweating. If heat doesn’t make you nauseous and you’re okay to practice on a semi-empty stomach, then don’t stress about eating before class. Listen to your body.
What to wear for hot yoga
Fitted clothing is best for hot yoga. Wear fabric that is, or is closely related to, the spandex family. When your clothes feel more like a second skin, you won’t even notice if they’re wet, and you can focus on your practice.
What to bring to hot yoga
Many studios will provide you with whatever you need, but be sure to check the venue listing for details on what you can rent or what you’ll need to bring from home. It’s always a good idea to bring a reusable water bottle and a towel if you have them.
How much does hot yoga cost?
Hot yoga typically costs between $10 and $20 per session. The price of the class will depend on your location, the experience of the instructor, and the length of the session.
