see all reviewsA very fun experience even for first timers who had zero clue about martial arts. The Coaches would adjust the training intensity (time and reps) depending on the different levels of fitness and experience of class goers (1.5 instructors to 3-4 students in off-peak). Lots of variety in exercises and techniques to provide a progressive circuit, combining movements taught earlier on in the session into a longer series of movements by the end as well as general motor control exercises. Training area would be cleaned immediately after class and there were ample hygiene facilities and lockers. Difficulties in understanding verbal prompts would also be quickly resolved via demonstrations.

My impression with WTF TKD was that it was mainly for acrobatic performances where performers do multiple aeriel flips before breaking wooden boards. However, the masters taught me kicks for realistic combat. Front snap kicks can be used to strike my enemies’ nuts, and turning kicks can be aimed at my enemy’s hips. I remember I had a yellow belt when I was 6. However, I forgot everything and went straight back to beginner’s level. My hips are too tight so I cannot do round house kicks. The teen was much better than me, but I am roughly triple his age, so I do not feel bad.

He also had lots of philosophical ideas on how I can pass my enemy’s guard, do the knee on belly, and do the knee slice. Now I finally understand what people meant when they liken BJJ to playing chess.Lots of food for thought. If I can incorporate his ideas into my skills, my technique will improve a lot, giving me higher chances to defeat my enemies.

The Professor showed me how to deploy a butterfly sweep upon my enemy and land right into mount, with my enemy’s arm already trapped. He then showed me how to submit my enemy, using a move I am not familiar with. A senior student told me it was a mixture of the ‘paper cutter’ and ‘baseball bat’. Because I am a zero degree white belt, I cannot do the hand grips properly. I thought my shoulder and wrist were too stiff, but the Professor said it was not a flexibility issue. Probably the body placement was not correct. I hope I can improve as I keep practicing.

We then did a drill where we seemingly repeatedly hug our partners left and right. Becsuse I am a beginner, I had no idea why would I ever want to hug my enemy. However, it quickly became apparant that the hugging exercise is a drill to train us in how to get double underhooks, which can be used to takedown my enemy or take his back. The professor also showed variations where I pin my enemy against the wall, and take out his poses one by one until he eventually goes into the ground. The entire time, I am pounding my enemy with one hand and controlling him with another, until he is down on the ground, then I can pin him with my body or legs and use both hands to whack him. 4 students: a strong caucasian dude(my partner) + me + two teenage dudes.

The Professor taught me how to take my enemy’s back from half guard, escape back take, and employ Key Moo Ra or Americano to defeat my enemy. He also showed me how to do a forward roll on concrete. Since I am a 0 degree white belt, I dare not try it because it costs $5500 to deliver an unconscious person to Adventist hospital by ambulence. I tried doing a forward roll on the soft mat, but my form is so bad that I would definitely injure myself if I did it on concrete.

The Male Master taught me how to counter arm grabs. Because I am in grade 0, I cannot do the rotation of the wrist properly , thus unable to apply enough torque to perform the technique flawlessly. We then practiced counter punches and counter pierces. At first, I wondered why would I ever poke my enemy’s chest with my fingers, but then the Master explained the fingers are used for training only to develop a sense of piercing forward. In a fight, I turn the finger stabbing into a fist and punch my enemies.

Then, we jumped over a high rail, like in parkour, or something like that. I was not able to, so I jumped next to the rail rather than over it. The rest of the class is what you would expect in an MMA class. Lots of fun; the beginning was the hardest.

see all reviewsFriendly instructor. Maybe a bit too friendly? I felt like the rest times were really long and not just because he was correcting form but because he and the other two girls (who seemed to be regulars) started conversing. But to be fair the class went on for an extra 30 mins as well (on the assumption it was only supposed to be an hour). I would’ve like it more if he corrected during the time you were doing it rather than the breaks. The following has nothing to do with the rating a chose but just something I needed to mention, I’m pretty good at conversational canto but really struggled to understand technical terms and what I can only assume were muscle names and things - so it was a bit hard to follow his corrections - has nothing to do with how I rated since I’m sure many would like the extra tidbits of info but it would have been easier for me if he simpled it down to “hands x width apart” “legs wider” “squeeze your core” and where I should be feeling it rather than trying to understand what he was talking about how because it’s a cable and something you can pull down more instead of shifting your body back (?) honestly I didn’t understand all that much. Space was nice and clean :$ felt inviting.

Because I am a 0 degree white belt, I got taken down easily. He said that as I fall down, I should not hug my enemy. I should be trying to get to a better position. Hugging my enemy is due to fear, but does not help me, as it will put my enemy’s weight on me at an unfavourable position.
