About this class

This 90-minute basic Sivananda yoga class includes the following balanced sequence: an initial relaxation period, breathing exercises, sun salutations, a series of twelve basic postures (plus variations, depending of the level of the class), and a final deep relaxation. The yoga postures (asanas) and the breathing exercises (pranayama) are meditative and serve to harmonize the body, the mind and the intellect. This aids in releasing tension, stimulating blood circulation and promoting the proper function of the internal organs for total-body health. Alternating focus on movement, breath and conscious relaxation brings awareness within, and encourages calmness—a real experience of ancient yoga that will bring you a sense of wellbeing.

How to prepare

We supply complimentary mats, cushions and blankets. Of course, you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer. Please wear modest clothing.

How to get there

Free street parking. Bike racks out front. Two blocks from the L-Taraval Muni train (Get off at 23rd Ave). Four blocks from the #28 Muni bus (Get off at Vicente St). We are located on the SE corner of Vicente St and 23rd Ave.

Really interesting class. Different than what I expected. Half kundalini (chanting and Breathwork) 1/4 vinyasa flow, and 1/4 yin with a couple of power poses. I did enjoy the focus on breathwork, would do it again.

The Sivananda Center is awesome! The ladies here are very welcoming, loving and supportive. Their yogic practice is a classical style of yoga with a healthy emphasis on breath-work. Its definitely a spiritual practice, instead of a trendy fitness class. Highly recommend this place if you want an authentic yoga experience including all of the spiritual and philosophical aspects of the practice.

Ive never tried this type of yoga. I actually really enjoyed it. Its a long class but went by fast. The teacher had a organized routine which made my flow go smoothly. I would recommend if you want to relax and focus on your within.

THIS IS NOT YOUR BEACH BODY YOGA CLASS. If that's what you're looking for, please don't come here. (Although, you probably need this the most.) This yoga is geared towards those who seek yoga as a path to enlightenment. It's classical Hatha, meaning you open with devotional yoga (song) and breathing exercises before you do Hatha yoga (poses). It's great for clearing the mind and perfect for those who seek the depth behind their yoga practice or those on a path to inner peace. I love this kind of yoga and it's a great way to really practice, not just show up and strike a pose. Ground yourself and add this to your yoga regimen.
