About this class
This is a yoga developed to ease back pain, build stability, improve balance, heighten body awareness, and enhance mobility. It’s yoga that teaches you to engage the proper muscles to counter the long term effects of gravity. What makes this yoga different from all the other types of yoga? It’s yoga informed by physicians, physical therapists, and kinesiology—basically informed by the science of yoga and anatomy, and not just anatomy in general, but YOUR body’s anatomy. I’ve taken the classical yoga poses and determined the function and intent of the pose and redesigned many of them to fit to your body type. For example, why force your hand to the ground in pyramid or side angle pose? Some yogis are able to do this, but many cannot. In SmartYoga I determine the function of the pose we are reaching for, such as stretching the side body. Many yogis compromise and twist the back improperly just to get hands to the ground because this is what they have seen as the correct “pose” when in reality it may be doing more harm than good. In SmartYoga you’ll learn how to change the pose to match you where you are. Yoga is a dance with gravity and in SmartYoga I’ll teach you how to strengthen the “core”, how to improve balance by engaging the right muscle groups, and why yoga is a “little bit of movement from a lot of different places in the body”. How to prepare
Please wear comfortable yoga or exercise clothes. Wearing slightly form-fitting clothing is advised so that the instructor may provide alignment cues and corrections.
