About this class

This class focuses on imparting the fundamentals of a vinyasa practice. Focus on breath, bandhas (root locks) which support the spine, foundation and modifications for the vinyasa flow sequence, and technique and alignment for the postures used in the vinyasa classes. It will provide a good base for a beginning practice and reinforce basic fundamentals for a seasoned practitioner.

How to prepare

Bring a yoga mat, water and towel and wear fitted, moisture-wicking exercise clothes. Remember that every single person in class had a first hot yoga class once. Though yoga may seem unfamiliar at first, try to leave your ego at the door and let yourself be a beginner. Yoga is a practice, but every person in the room is there for the same reason: yoga makes us feel better. Every PFY studio offers Warm Vinyasa Basics classes. In these classes, you will break down common vinyasa yoga poses and learn modifications so you feel empowered and safe.

How to get there

Powerflow Yoga's flagship studio is located at 254 Main St in Chatham, NJ. They are in the heart of downtown Chatham, right across the street from Gregorio’s Mediterranean and the Chatham Sandwich Shop. There is free two-hour parking available on Main St. and Center St. on either side of the studio in addition to a lot behind the studio on Center St. If you have any questions, please direct them to PFY Chatham studio manager Siobhan Wright at chatham@powerflownj.com.

Warm Powerflow Basics with Lisa
I have mixed feelings about this class. On one hand, moving and sweating is always a good thing. And for where I am in my practice (former 4x a week practitioner returning to the mat after a lengthy, lazy hiatus), this class was the right pace for me. On the other hand, the title of this class is misleading. I dont consider half moon pose or ankle to knee pose basic. I was surprised that the vinyasas were all chaturanga/up dog right off the bat with no mention of knees/chest/chin/cobra ever. (Not that that stopped me from lowering my knees.) In fact no basic modifications were offered at any point. So oddly, I would suggest you have a basic understanding of poses and alignment before you take this basics class. Sidenote: if you are scent-sensitive or have allergies, just a heads up that they burn patchouli incense in the studio.

Class was pretty fast paced and the teacher was very clear! Played music during savasana which i didnt love...otherwise great class!
