Half the battle of having a <a href=\"https:\/\/classpass.com\/blog\/benefits-of-rock-climbing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">successful climbing session<\/a> is understanding the lingo and being able to execute movements safely. This glossary of terms covers the basics you\u2019ll hear regularly during class.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Accessory Cord:<\/strong> A rope that is not your climbing rope.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Aid Climbing:<\/strong> This is common in most rock climbing gyms. This refers to any equipment that is used to help in your ascent, like: foot slings, fixed bolts, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Anchor<\/strong>: This refers to the point at which your climbing rope is attached. It\u2019s comprised of slings, runners and the rope itself.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">B<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Belay:<\/strong> To keep a climber from falling too fast, friction is applied on the rope through an apparatus. This includes the rope itself, anchors and the belay device itself.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Belayer:<\/strong> This refers to the person that will be helping you not to fall while you\u2019re mid-climb.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bottleneck:<\/strong> A crack with converging sides on the climbing wall.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bouldering:<\/strong> Climbing with no ropes, very close to the ground. This technique is used to practice traverses, foot and hand placements, and weight transfers. This is a great place to start for newcomers!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">C<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Carabiner:<\/strong> A metal loop with a spring loaded gate that is used to connect various parts of the climbing system.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Crack:<\/strong> A break in the wall, either very slim or wide.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Crux:<\/strong> The toughest sequence and moves of your climb.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">D<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dihedral:<\/strong> Two planes of a rock wall that intersect. It\u2019s an inside corner where you can apply counter pressure to climb.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">E<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Edging:<\/strong> Standing on small edges or footholds with the edges of your climbing shoes, not the soles.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">F<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Free Climb:<\/strong> Climbing only with your hands and feet. The rope is only used for safety. This is the opposite of an aid climb.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">J<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jam:<\/strong> To wedge a body part in a crack in order to put weight on it and move upward.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jug:<\/strong> Large, easily gripped hold. It can also mean climbing up a fixed rope using an ascender.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">L<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Leg Loops:<\/strong> The part of your harness that goes around the upper legs. It\u2019s typically attached to the waist belt.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">P<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Passive Protection:<\/strong> This refers to any gear that is used that\u2019s not attached to your rope. Think: wedges, hexentrics, etc. Anything that you can wedge into a crack to use as leverage on your climb.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Q<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Quickdraw:<\/strong> A runner that is used to attach a rope to a bolted anchor with carabiners.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">R<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Rack:<\/strong> The selection of gear chosen for your climb.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Rand:<\/strong> The upper rubber strip running around the edge of your climbing shoe.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">S<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Smear:<\/strong> This refers to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a climbing technique in which the sole of the shoe, plus proper weight over the feet, provides traction for moving upward.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solo:<\/strong> To climb alone without protection.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">W<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Whipper:<\/strong> A long fall.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rock climbing can be a bit intimidating, but how you prepare for your first class doesn\u2019t have to be!
