It\u2019s evident in the fact that athleisure \u2014 the act of wearing casual and comfortable clothing designed for exercise \u2014 has become a fashion trend in its own right. While we think that workout clothes are great for just about every activity out there, wearing them for too long can be a problem. Synthetic leggings, specifically, are not made to wear for long periods of time, as doing so can put you at risk for a host of health issues, according to experts. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What can happen to your skin<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start with the bad news. After a class, there is a good chance you\u2019ve worked up a full-body sweat \u2014 in some places more than others. Tight-fitting clothes can trap sweat and clog pores which welcomes a variety of potential issues such as: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial Infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fungal Infections<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cystic Body Acne<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conjunctivitis<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflamed Hair Follicles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But don\u2019t panic, most of these issues are avoidable if you take the right precautions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What you should do<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joshua Zeichner, Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, says that the sooner you can take off workout clothes and shower the better. \u201cIf you didn&#8217;t sweat much when working out then you likely can leave the clothing on for a few hours without any issues,\u201d he adds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you hop in the shower, Dr. Zeichner also has some recommendations. \u201cRemember, skin after a workout may be sensitive and inflamed, so stick to a gentle cleanser, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walmart.com\/ip\/Dove-Sensitive-Skin-Beauty-Bar-4-oz-8-bar\/21186531?wmlspartner=wlpa&amp;selectedSellerId=0&amp;adid=22222222227015580529&amp;wl0=&amp;wl1=g&amp;wl2=c&amp;wl3=40843708472&amp;wl4=pla-78656879912&amp;wl5=9004331&amp;wl6=&amp;wl7=&amp;wl8=&amp;wl9=pla&amp;wl10=8175035&amp;wl11=online&amp;wl12=21186531&amp;wl13=&amp;veh=sem\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dove Beauty Bar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that will hydrate you while you wash and won&#8217;t disrupt the skin barrier,\u201d he adds. \u201cMoisturize with a light lotion, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walmart.com\/ip\/Aveeno-Sheer-Hydration-Daily-Moisturizing-Lotion-12-Fl-Oz\/40713158\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aveeno Sheer Hydration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.target.com\/p\/vaseline-intensive-care-lotion-advanced-repair-unscented-32-oz\/-\/A-13345370\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaseline Intensive Care Advanced Repair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can be easily spread without weighing down the skin \u2014 this will help calm things down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>If you can\u2019t shower or change<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If changing or showering isn\u2019t an option until later, ACSM-certified personal trainer and nutrition coach, Hope Pedraza has some solid advice. \u201cFirst, I always have all-natural cleansing facial and body wipes to \u2018shower off\u2019 the sweat and gunk and prevent breakouts after a workout,\u201d she says. \u201cI also have deodorant and deodorant wipes on hand to freshen up.\u201d If she knows it\u2019s going to be an extra sweaty workout, she will bring a change of clothes and then freshen up with the body wipes and deodorant. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Don\u2019t forget the footwear<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget about those sweaty shoes you just worked out in. Roger E. Adams, Ph.D., Houston-based dietitian, nutritionist, and founder of eatrightfitness.com, recommends removing them and placing them somewhere to air out (not in your gym bag). This will not only keep your shoes from stinking, but will also prolong their life. \u201cBacteria growth in shoes can lead to an early demise for your most important pieces of workout gear,\u201d he adds. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The bottom line<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to avoid these issues is by getting out of sweaty clothes as quickly as possible.
