Soups are awesome for diets\u2014they\u2019re filling and satisfying\u2014but there\u2019s a difference between ones that are great and ones that, well, aren\u2019t so great (we aren\u2019t going to say \u201cbad,\u201d because they can be delicious). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is soup healthy?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, soup can be very healthy! Many soups include a variety of lean proteins and vegetables. The best soups are the ones that are broth-based, whether that\u2019s beef, chicken or veggie broth. They warm your stomach with a serving of low-calorie, low-fat goodness that\u2019s flavored with macronutrients (like protein) and micronutrients (from veggies, like carrot, celery, and onion) as well as spices. These sorts of soups are a complete meal in a satiating cup. That said, it\u2019s worth evaluating the amount of sodium in each of these soups\u2014it can be a surprising amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The worst soups are the ones that are cream-based or even cheese-based. These start with a heavy dose of fat that can be compared to the amount in a dessert. Whatever the nutritional value of the other ingredients\u2014from clams and lobster to broccoli and mushroom\u2014it\u2019s compromised by the decadence of the base. Soups like bisques and chowders can be yummy, but they aren\u2019t what anyone would consider to be diet-friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n[sc name=&#8221;saveupto70off&#8221; ]\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, we consult with Cara Walsh of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medifast California<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the best and worst soups when it comes to your diet:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Healthy soups<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Healthy soups typically include lean proteins, vegetables and are water or broth based. They are delicious year-round, but feel free to jazz up the soups below with seasonal vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Black-eyed pea soup<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/recipes\/food-network-kitchens\/black-eyed-pea-soup.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warm wonder<\/a> is powered by its dose of black-eyed peas, a source of protein that is low calorie, low fat and packed, with nutrients, including iron and Vitamin B9. Plus, this soup receives a boost of vitamins and minerals from its veggies (e.g. carrot, celery, and onion). Want to be even healthier? Hold the bacon and ham.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Butternut squash soup<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <a href=\"https:\/\/cookieandkate.com\/2015\/roasted-butternut-squash-soup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">velvety dish<\/a> is one of the healthiest soups, according to Walsh. &#8216;That\u2019s because it\u2019s packed with Vitamin A, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. There\u2019s a host of other goodies in this soup, including Vitamin C\u2014plus, a sprinkle of autumn! Because what\u2019s better than the taste of squash during the fall season? <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chicken noodle soup<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <a href=\"https:\/\/allrecipes.com\/recipe\/13206\/grandmas-chicken-noodle-soup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">favorite<\/a> is good for the soul\u2014and the waistline. It\u2019s low in calories and fat and boasts&nbsp;a solid amount of protein from the chicken broth and, of course, the chicken. This soup is also a source of selenium and Vitamin A, which supports your thyroid. Our one caveat: it\u2019s sodium-rich, so be cautious about the salt. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minestrone soup<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This broth-based stew is brimming with veggies, which means a rainbow of fiber and nutrients. (We prefer the version with tomatoes because, well, it\u2019s Italian and what\u2019s more Italian than tomatoes?) \u201cThis soup is packed with vegetables that can help you reach your daily vegetable intake!\u201d Walsh adds.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Unhealthy soups<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most things and foods are fine in moderation, but consuming high levels of saturated fat on a regular basis tend not to promote health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Broccoli and cheese soup nutrition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The healthiness of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/recipes\/ree-drummond\/broccoli-cheese-soup-recipe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this dense soup <\/a>depends on the focus of the recipe: the broccoli or the cheese. \u201cAny soup that uses the cheese as the base is not the healthy way to go,&#8221; Walsh says. &#8220;Most versions of this soup focus on the cheese, rather than the broccoli.\u201d Broccoli is one of the most awesome veggies because of its nutrition profile, but not when it\u2019s drowning in cream and cheese. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clam chowder nutrition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clams are a great source of protein, are low in calories and fat,&nbsp;and filled with minerals. That said, clams aren\u2019t as low&nbsp;in calories and fat when added to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epicurious.com\/recipes\/food\/views\/new-england-clam-chowder-104185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dish<\/a> that\u2019s rich with cream and dressed with potatoes and bacon. And Walsh agrees, \u201cClam chowder is one of the worst soups a person can eat. It\u2019s high in fat, calories and sodium.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is 180 calories in a cup of clam chowder. The macronutrient breakdown in a cup of clam chowder is 20 grams of carbohydrates, 8 grams of fat and 6 grams of protein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instant ramen nutrition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cup Noodles (and other brands of instant ramen) are basically cups of hot water overflowing with sodium and MSG. \u201cInstant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forkknifeswoon.com\/simple-homemade-chicken-ramen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ramen<\/a> is one of the worst soups one can eat,&#8221; Walsh says. &#8220;It offers little nutritional value and is very high in sodium.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lobster bisque nutrition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is <a href=\"https:\/\/cooking.nytimes.com\/recipes\/1012881-lobster-bisque\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">another soup<\/a> with the curse of being too creamy, according to Walsh. \u201cLobster bisque has 20 percent of the daily recommended serving of fat, and most of it is saturated fat. Plus, there are close to one thousand grams of sodium!\u201d Lobster is an excellent (albeit expensive) source of protein, but our recommendation?&nbsp;Save this soup for a special occasion.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Tis the season, especially when it comes to warming meals like soups.
