It might be the distance that scares you, or the prospect of getting injured, but that&#8217;s no reason to stop yourself from the extremely <a href=\"https:\/\/classpass.com\/blog\/benefits-of-running-class\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rewarding feeling<\/a> of crossing that finish line. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backonmyfeet.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back on My Feet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the national nonprofit that works to combat homelessness through running, puts it this way: \u201cRunning a marathon is totally worth it. Running is such a beautiful thing to be a part of\u2014between the milestones you reach, the communities you become a part of, and generally just living a healthier lifestyle.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you&#8217;ve never gone the (full) distance before, how do you know you&#8217;re ready? Take a look at some clear signs that you&#8217;re ready to sign up for a marathon. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You&#8217;re\u00a0generally fit<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Honerkamp, senior coach at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Road Runners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-leader at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/november-project.com\/new-york-ny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">November Project-NYC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, points out that preferably, someone who wants to take the marathon plunge should already have some type of fitness base. \u201cIdeally, a runner looking to run a marathon has gradually built up their training and racing enough to have trained and raced a half marathon,\u201d he says. \u201cI am amazed how many runners just jump into a marathon as their first race. I&#8217;ve seen people train for 20 or 16- weeks and be ready enough to tackle a marathon. Now their goal is usually to \u2018just finish\u2019 vs. a certain time goal. I think a runner should have some general running fitness before thinking about a marathon. But I constantly see all levels taking the marathon plunge.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You\u2019re consistent with your running<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/author\/chris-heuisler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Heuisler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, National RunWESTIN Concierge for Westin Hotels and Resorts, says that the longest distance you\u2019ve run is not as important as how often you do it. \u201cI think the most important factor in determining whether or not someone is ready for a marathon is consistency,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can be an extremely fit person, but if your weekly mileage was all over the place throughout training, your natural fitness alone\u00a0cannot create a successful 26.2-mile race. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, you may be a runner for over 10 years, but if you haven\u2019t been running on a consistent basis with above average weekly mileage, I don\u2019t think that means you\u2019re ready to run a strong race. What\u2019s the best way to judge consistency? Go look at your last 12 weeks of training. Are there any major dips in mileage that weren\u2019t planned recovery weeks? Were you injured? Or do you see a gradual increase in either total mileage or total time spent running? If that\u2019s the case, I\u2019d say, \u2018Lace up those running shoes and go have the run of a lifetime.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You\u2019re bored with shorter distances<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Daphnie Yang, ISSA-certified personal trainer, race coach and creator of <a href=\"https:\/\/classpass.com\/search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIIT IT! High-Intensity Interval Training Workout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says half-marathons have grown in popularity recently\u2014but that doesn\u2019t mean you should stop there. Why not try to go for a full marathon? \u201cIf you keep doing [half-marathons] and it\u2019s starting to get stale or feel easy, then you can probably handle the rigorous training of a full marathon,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You\u2019re realistic about resting<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yang notes that she sees a lot of overtraining by first-time marathoners. She advises newbies to \u201ctrain smarter not harder.\u201d (And make sure you\u2019re using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proper form<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!) She adds, \u201cThe tendency when you\u2019re training for your first marathon is to hit it hard right away\u201d with intense runs and little recovery time. That is not advisable, she says. \u201cIt\u2019s equally important to recover from workouts [and] to work out,\u201d Yang says. \u201cIt\u2019s during recovery that your body has a chance to get stronger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You\u2019re mixing in other workouts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, actually running is one of the biggest parts of training for a long race, but it\u2019s not the only part, Yang says. It\u2019s essential to cross train while prepping for a marathon.\u201d It\u2019s just as important as running without working and fatiguing the same muscles,\u201d she says. Without it, on race day, you likely won\u2019t have the stamina or strength to run for four-plus hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You\u2019ve already tackled a smaller race<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For marathon virgins looking to get over their nerves before signing up, Honerkamp recommends focusing on a smaller or shorter goal first. \u201cCrawl before you walk, walk before you run,\u201d he says. \u201cIf a runner has already run a half, then I say they should just sign up for a marathon. Take the plunge\u2014they&#8217;re ready (if they\u2019re healthy).\u201d Yang points out that a smaller race\u2014even a 5K\u2014gives you experience with the process of running a race, including checking in, picking up your race bib, and dealing with crowds, hydration and pacing on race day. So even a turkey trot on Thanksgiving morning can serve as valuable experience for your longer races.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You have something to prove<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe best reason [to run a marathon] is you have some type of desire to prove something,\u201d Yang says. Whether you just went through the worst break-up of your life, or you need to carve out some me-time after a crazy year at work, having an emotional reason for crossing the finish line will keep you going throughout your training. Even if you don\u2019t have one specific goal in mind, Yang recommends dedicating each mile to something or someone as a motivator on race day. It\u2019s definitely easier to get to the next mile when you\u2019re doing it for your BFF or your favorite niece.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You are running for a cause<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that same vein, Honerkamp points out that running for a cause and\/or running with a team group are great motivators. Knowing that you\u2019re not in this alone and potentially helping a cause near and dear to your heart can definitely make the process easier. Also, enlist your social circle to be your cheerleaders not only on race day but throughout the process. \u201cShare your training journey on social media,\u201d Honerkamp says. \u201cShare your ups and downs, your wins and losses. Rally your troops around you.
