Or maybe you\u2019re bored at work or feel a little awkward at a networking event and find yourself snacking on whatever is within reach when you\u2019re not even <em>that<\/em> hungry to begin with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs active individuals, we eat to fuel our bodies, but as unique humans, we eat for so many other reasons,\u201d says Claire Shorenstein, NYC-based registered dietitian at <a href=\"https:\/\/findyourtrainer.com\/start\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Find Your Trainer<\/a>. But determining <i>how much <\/i>to eat can be tricky\u2014especially if you work out on the reg. \u201cYou\u2019re expending all this energy, may experience changes in appetite and may also be juggling performance or weight-related goals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overeating symptoms<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>While there\u2019s no one-size-fits-all answer since your nutrition needs vary based on size, gender, age, metabolism and other factors, it is important to recognize the telling signs that you&#8217;re consuming too many calories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to tell if you&#8217;re eating too much:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Worried that you\u2019re overdoing it, but don\u2019t know for sure? Check out these indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You continue eating even after you feel satisfied<\/li><li>You feel so full you actually need to take a breather before your next bite<\/li><li>You barely pay attention to the meal in front of you<\/li><li>The thought of having a big appetite gives you anxiety<\/li><li>You feel heavy or weighed down after you finish a meal<\/li><li>You usually eat alone to avoid feelings of guilt or shame<\/li><li>You can\u2019t keep your favorite food in the house without eating it all in one sitting<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong data-rich-text-format-boundary=\"true\">Please Note:<\/strong> If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, please seek medical help. In fact,&nbsp;your stomach knows when you\u2019ve had just the right amount or way too much. You shouldn\u2019t feel like you\u2019re bursting from the seams, but instead, no longer feel hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is something most of us do from time to time and a lot of it has to do with habits around eating, for example, eating too quickly and being distracted while we eat,\u201d says Isabel Smith, R.D., a New York City-based celebrity dietitian and fitness expert. \u201cIt takes about 20 minutes for your brain and stomach to communicate that you\u2019re full, so if you\u2019re shoveling food down too quickly, this can contribute to overeating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solution: <a href=\"https:\/\/classpass.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-eating-so-much\/\">try practicing mindful eating.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>You feel so full you actually need to take a breather before your next bite<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve all been there before\u2014whether it\u2019s a&nbsp;late-night pizza binge&nbsp;or a&nbsp;giant rice bowl from Chipotle. But if you find yourself stopping before continuing to finish your meal because you\u2019re getting too full, take this as a sign you\u2019re overdoing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solution: <a href=\"https:\/\/classpass.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-eating-so-much\/\">pause during meals.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>You barely pay attention to the meal in front of you<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This might not be a surefire sign of overeating, but it can definitely lead you down the path towards overindulging. \u201cYour body needs a bit of time to produce leptin, a hormone that signals satiety to your brain,\u201d says Kayleen St. John, R.D., M.S., nutritional and culinary advisor for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euphebe.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Euphebe<\/a>. \u201cIf you\u2019re eating quickly and not paying attention to your meal, you can overeat before your satiety hormone even signals to your brain that you\u2019re full.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solution: <a href=\"https:\/\/classpass.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-eating-so-much\/\">create uninterrupted time for meals.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>The thought of having a big appetite gives you anxiety<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re afraid of having an appetite, it might be because you tend to eat too much at each meal, or you think that having an appetite will make you eat too much and therefore gain weight,\u201d says Bonney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More food for thought: Most of us have been&nbsp;fortunate enough to never experience true hunger. And because it\u2019s a foreign feeling, we might have a&nbsp;fear of having a true appetite or being truly hungry. \u201cA reminder I give clients is that if you\u2019re truly hungry, you would be excited to eat a plate of boiled broccoli and beans (no seasoning or salt),\u201d says St. John. \u201cIf that meal sounds appealing to you, you\u2019re likely to be truly hungry and not eating out of boredom or habit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to overcome this feeling is to try and make mealtimes more positive experiences by spreading out your meals so you end up eating less at each meal, or inviting a friend to join you to make the time more enjoyable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>You feel heavy or weighed down after you finish a meal<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have that post-Thanksgiving-dinner feeling on the reg, you definitely need to rethink portions. \u201cThis is a sign you may be choosing heavier foods or eating too much at one sitting,\u201d says Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solution: <a href=\"https:\/\/classpass.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-eating-so-much\/\">fit fruits and veggies into every meal.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>You usually eat alone to avoid feelings of guilt or shame<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you live alone or work from home, you\u2019re definitely going to be consuming the majority of your meals solo. But if you\u2019re constantly dodging group lunches and always eating meals at your desk, it may be because you\u2019re eating certain things you wouldn\u2019t normally eat in front of others or eating behaviors you wouldn\u2019t normally do (like eating with our hands or right out of the bag instead of putting something on a plate and eating with a fork). \u201cThis eating behavior can tend to make us feel guilty or shameful for choices we\u2019ve made,\u201d says Bonney. \u201cChoosing a healthy, nutritious meal usually helps us feel more positive, confident and virtuous about our choices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>You can\u2019t keep your favorite food in the house without eating it all in one sitting<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This definitely varies for everyone. For you it might be a box of Oreos and for your friend it might be a family-sized bag of Cheetos. But regardless of what your &#8216;trigger food&#8217; is, you shouldn\u2019t have a love-hate relationships with it or feel unable to stop eating once you start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solution: <a href=\"https:\/\/classpass.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-eating-so-much\/\">avoid buying large quantities of trigger foods.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s easy to sit down on the couch&nbsp;with a large portion of [insert your favorite food here] and without realizing it, eat every last bite.
