The girl next to you starts stretching in front of the mirror,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;contorting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in ways you didn\u2019t even know were possible. And to top it all off, you\u2019ve never taken the class before.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hey, we\u2019ve been there.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you&#8217;re taking yoga, Pilates, barre or cycling, walking into a new gym or studio can feel intimidating, even anxiety-producing. It\u2019s called gymtimidation, and it\u2019s real. If you\u2019ve ever experienced a pre-workout confidence crash or felt self-conscious walking into a new fitness facility, you know what we\u2019re talking about. And you\u2019re not alone! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is gymtimidation?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Gymtimidation is a feeling of uncomforted or self-consciousness when entering a gym or workout class. You may feel like others are watching and judging you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ost of us have felt gymtimidation at some point in our lives. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-2532736\/Destined-remain-fat-We-avoid-working-blighted-Gymtimidation-study-reveals.html?ITO=1490&amp;ns_mchannel=rss&amp;ns_campaign=1490\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reveals that women are two times as self-conscious about exercising as men. So what causes gymtimidation? Women reported feeling unfit, others judging them and not knowing what the heck to do as the primary reasons for their discomfort. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel badly about yourself, so you don\u2019t work out. You don\u2019t work out, so you end up feeling badly about yourself. It\u2019s a vicious cycle, and it ends now! Don\u2019t let insecurity and fear mess with your fitness goals and self esteem. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How to feel confident in the gym<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Realize that everyone has been there<\/li><li>Remind yourself of your goals<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t compare yourself to others<\/li><li>Ask for help<\/li><li>Get inspired by your workout instructors<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Realize that we all have to start somewhere<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don&#8217;t need to be in the best shape ever to go work out. That&#8217;s part of the reason <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you&#8217;re going! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone, even your amazing <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.classpass.com\/2016\/07\/26\/what-your-barre-teacher-is-thinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">barre instructor<\/a>&nbsp;was new once. We all have to start somewhere.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as with anything, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the key to growing comfort and confidence in class is to be consistent and go regularly. The more you do something, the more natural it becomes. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Remind yourself of why you&#8217;re there<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise is awesome! It boosts <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.classpass.com\/2016\/07\/24\/how-to-boost-your-mood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">endorphins<\/a>, improves strength and helps build a positive body image. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What motivates each of us is different. Whether your goal is to sweat it out at cycling, work your core at Pilates or boost flexibility at yoga, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remind yourself why you picked this particular class and what you hope to achieve. Your path is personal, a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd we think that\u2019s pretty awesome.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Try your best not to compare<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on yourself. During a high-impact kickboxing class<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or a sweaty yoga session, everyone is paying attention to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">themselves, and probably checking themselves\u2014not you\u2014out in the mirror. We promise. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t get distracted watching or comparing yourself to other class goers. You don\u2019t know where someone else is on his or her fitness journey. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Don\u2019t be afraid to ask for help<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stepping into a class can be nerve-wracking, especially if you\u2019re not sure what to do. Talk to your instructor before class and let him\/her know you\u2019re new. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask is there\u2019s a particular spot that\u2019s best for new students. If not, find a spot in the middle of the room. This way you won\u2019t feel like you\u2019re on display in the front row and can see and hear the instructor demo throughout class.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And there\u2019s no shame in explaining that you\u2019re nervous. Your teacher is your best resource. H<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e or she <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is to here to help, encourage and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.classpass.com\/2016\/06\/08\/heres-olympic-soccer-player-kelley-ohara-stays-motivated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">motivate<\/a> you to do your best. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Get inspired by instructors<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the help of some of our fave <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.classpass.com\/2016\/07\/19\/body-positive-celebrities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">body-positive<\/a> instructors, we\u2019re sharing awesome advice to help you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overcome gymtimidation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(because it seriously shouldn\u2019t be a thing)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think the most important thing with any practice is to be content with yourself, where your body is at this moment. Accept that it always changes. Some days you&#8217;ll feel like a rock star and others you\u2019ll need a little bit of extra encouragement. I also just like to wear sparklies! It&#8217;s part of the reason why I started my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/evolvefitwear.com\/brands\/kat-schamens-leggings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apparel line<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Be in the moment and open to the instruction. Go into any class knowing that it\u2019s a process for the body and mind to adopt new habits. Be patient with yourself, have a sense of humor and don&#8217;t be afraid to ask questions.
