Fun fact: New Year’s resolutions started a long time ago with the ancient Babylonians, who made promises at the start of each year in hopes they’d be rewarded favorably by their Gods. Fast forward thousands of years later, and New Year’s resolutions continue to be an annual ritual that many participate in year after year. One of the most popular resolutions people make? As you can probably guess, many promise to become healthier at the start of January. And unfortunately, many tend to fail at fulfilling that.
It’s not that we aren’t capable of fulfilling resolutions, but that often what we intend to do is much too complex, difficult and not easy to attain. A few months later, feeling too discouraged to do anything about it, we often give up and say we’ll try again next year.
But there’s something to be said about the power of making a goal and working hard to achieve it. And it is possible—if you do it right. That’s why we’ve compiled some of our favorite wellness-related New Year’s resolution ideas for you: All being simple, realistic and attainable. But first, keep reading for our tips on making (and keeping) this year’s resolution stick.
Tip 1: Get specific
Sorry, but “get healthy” or “lose weight” simply isn’t going to cut it. If you don’t get specific with your goals, you won’t be able to track your progress towards them. Start with an idea of what you want to achieve (e.g. be healthier) then start to narrow down ideas on how you can do that (exercise more, cook healthy recipes, etc). Hone in on one idea and stick with it.
Tip 2: Make it realistic
If you’re a pro-snoozer, you’re probably not going to become a morning person overnight. But if you recognize that morning workout classes fit better for your schedule and you would really like to try getting up earlier, commit to one morning class a week. That is far easier to attain—and you’re much less likely to get discouraged after a day or two.
Tip 3: Partner up for accountability
Can you find someone who will want to partner with you on your resolutions? Having a friend or family member work with you towards the goals will make it so much easier for you to stick with them (and a lot more fun!) Plus, studies show that publicizing your goals (i.e. by telling friends or posting on social media) gives you more incentive to achieve them.
