Stress and lack of sleep, which usually go hand-in-hand, can have you looking and feeling less than your best. But are they the only reasons you look tired during the day? Short of any major life changes, is there anything you can do quickly to look revitalized?
Deborah Burnes, founder of Sumbody, gets to the bottom of some of the causes for looking tired during the day. “There are so many reasons why we appear to look tired,” Burnes says. “The most obvious is a lack of sleep. However, this is neither the only reason nor even the most prominent reason in some cases.” Here are some simple solutions to keep you looking rested during the day, from long-term solutions to quick fixes.
Lack of sleep
Let’s start with the most obvious one. “Lack of sleep can cause everything from bags under the eyes, dark circles, red eyes to overall facial puffiness,” Burnes says. She recommends essential oil therapy or bath salts to help you unwind before bed to get a good night’s sleep. Whether or not that is possible, a great eye cream will help mask the signs of lack of sleep. Look for something with arnica, prickly pear or licorice to help dark circles. Ingredients like cucumber, chamomile or aloe help with puffiness under the eyes.

Lack of exercise
“Sitting at a computer all day doing work, and lack of exercise in general, can make you look tired,” Burnes explains. Try taking classes regularly, at least three times a week. “Additionally, if you have a job that requires you to be sitting for most of the day, use your lunch breaks and 10-minute breaks mindfully,” Burnes suggests. “If you can, go outside. Also, try standing up every 45 minutes and stretching,” Burnes says.
Dehydration can be a culprit if you’re looking tired, even if you’re sleeping well and exercising regularly. “Beyond making sure you’re getting enough fluid internally, make sure you’re also hydrating your skin from the outside,” Burnes suggests. “Using a pure plant hydrosol during the day will help keep you looking fresh and your skin hydrated.” These sprays can also be used to set makeup, as they’re packed with antioxidant benefits.

Dehydrated skin may seem obvious, but flat hair can make you look more tired than you already are. “Using products that help give your hair volume without weighing it down also gives a more rested look,” Barnes states. Try a dry shampoo to revive second or third-day hair or any time you’re looking for a little extra oomph at the roots. This will give volume at the top, but won’t weigh down the ends.
