What to Carry in Your Spring Gym Bag

Every fitness buff needs a well-stocked gym bag. Whether you are hitting up a yoga class before work, or you need to get to class quickly after a long day, you’ll need your bag ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Fitness blogger Ashley Chmelka provides the scoop on all the cool products to keep in your gym bag this spring. From the oldie-but-goodies that need to stay in your possession, to the coolest new trends, you’re going to want to keep these items on hand for quick access after class.

A Versatile Gym Bag

A conversation about the contents of a gym bag starts with the gym bag itself. A lightweight and versatile gym bag will ensure that you get to class on time, and look cute while you’re doing it. It should be big enough to carry important contents, but not so big that you’re straining your shoulders when you carry it. Chmelka is in love with her State Of Escape bag because it has tabs to make it smaller, or she can expand it to be an extra large tote. “When I travel I can put so much stuff in there, but you can snap the two sides together to make it smaller,” she explains. “In the summer when you’re running around from class to brunch, you have the flexibility to carry your brunch clothes in it but then you can reduce the size after you’ve changed into your outfit”.

A Healthy Deodorant

If you’re spending time sweating out toxins in your fitness classes, you should consider switching to a non-toxic deodorant. Many people don’t realize that mainstream deodorants contain high levels of aluminum, which has been theorized to cause breast cancer. Whether or not you believe that theory, we can all agree that antiperspirant is counterintuitive when you’re working up a sweat in class. We are meant to perspire, so why not choose a healthy deodorant versus an antiperspirant? Chmelka prefers this natural version from Lavanila. “It feels like I’ve tried a million natural deodorants, and I feel like this one works the best,” she says. “I like that it comes in the mini size that’s perfect for the gym bag.”

The Perfect Sneaker

Every person that has to run somewhere after their workout knows that a cute and comfortable shoe can make or break your day. Chmelka loves the Adidas ULTRABOOST. “It’s perfect for every type of workout,” she explains. Plus, it’s versatile for all different types of outfits. “Grab the classic black pair that goes with everything from workout clothes to leggings with a sweater for brunch,” she says.

A Chic Water Bottle

Your Instagram feed is likely filled with collages of workout essentials, and there’s always a cute water bottle in there somewhere. If you’ve been wondering where to get one that is both cute and functional, Chmelka provides some insight. “Soma water makes chic and modern-looking water filters and bottles,” she tells us. Bonus points because they want to end the global water crisis and donate to various water projects with every water filter you buy. Chmelka likes that the shatter-resistant glass bottle is durable, the top is bamboo, but, most importantly she likes what they stand for.

Face Wipes

Face wipes are a very necessary product in any gym bag. The hard truth is that people don’t often have time to shower after class, and need to be presentable in a short amount of time. Chmelka likes Burt’s Bees wipes because they’re natural, affordable, and easy. You can find them in just about any drugstore these days for a more natural face wipe option.

A Tinted Lip Balm

When running between class and errands, Chmelka recommends a natural lip balm that will keep your lips moisturized and give you just a hint of color. She likes Korres Butter Sticks because “they give a little bit of color, but nothing too aggressive,” she says.

Makeup Made For Workouts

Though it sounds like an oxymoron, makeup that is made for workouts is actually a thing now. It’s not so much that you care about what you look like in class, but after class, you want something that can hold up to any residual perspiration you have going on. Chmelka loves Sweat Cosmetic’s Mineral Illuminator because it gives “the perfect sheen if you don’t have much time to touch up after class”. Her favorite part is that is has SPF25 in the formula. “It’s really hard to find a product like a luminizer that has SPF in it,” Chmelka explains.
