ClassPass Book of the Month: Plot Twists You Won’t See Coming

“Twisted. Trippy. Unexpected.

These are just a few words that come to mind when describing the newest book from E. Lockhart. In the past, we were all enthralled by her book, We Were Liars, so I was very excited for her latest book to hit shelves.

Author: E. Lockhart

Genre: Mystery

GoodReads Rating: 3.43/5

My Rating: 3.5/5

Who would love this book:

People who love a fast-paced mystery

Synopsis in 280 characters or less:

Told in reverse, you learn about Jule’s mysterious life and how she arrived at this point. Through Jule’s flashbacks, you also learn about her best friend Imogen. Anything more, and we get into spoiler territory!

Why you should read it:

If you read We Are Liars and are expecting something similar, you will be disappointed. While Lockhart sticks with the mystery theme, these two stories are completely different and almost impossible to compare to each other. The book starts at chapter 18 and as you read on you’re going into the past and learning how Jule ends up where she did. The book was inspired by The Talented Mr. Ripley and if you’re a fan you’ll notice a lot of similarities.

There were many parts of this book that caught me off guard — which I love in a mystery — but the protagonist of the novel is both unlikeable and unreliable. Sure, you may be frustrated with the character but it makes for an interesting read and you’re constantly guessing what’s the truth and what’s not.
