Uh-Oh: Read This Before You Grab Your Morning Coffee

I think we can all come to an agreement that our morning cup of coffee is pretty much the first thing that crosses our minds as soon as that alarm goes off and our feet hit the floor. Right?  Yes! Well, it turns out that drinking our favorite morning cup on an empty stomach might actually be bad for our overall health.

Here’s the scoop: According to Today, some reports are saying that our morning habit could boost acid production in our stomach, causing indigestion and heartburn, and amplify the feelings of jitteriness and anxiety. Hmmm.

This becomes even more worrisome if you reach for a dark brew before you put something in your stomach first.

According to some experts that Today spoke with, the side effects are different for everyone. NBC News Health and Nutrition Editor Madelyn Fernstrom said, “This is a personal choice. Each person must decide if the early morning coffee on an empty stomach works for them,” Fernstrom said. “It works for some people, and not others. What’s most important is to know your own body.”

Moral of the story: listen to what your body is telling you when you start guzzling your favorite brew in the a.m.
