Getting acclimated in a new place can be a bit overwhelming. There’s so many new faces, places to explore, classes to take and of course — you want to find the one spot where everybody knows your name. The great thing about this experience is that you will have an opportunity to take in all of the experiences your new city has to offer and find your favorite hangouts that are sure to secure a special place in your heart.
1. Get to know your neighbors.
Unfortunately, we live in a world where so many people neglect getting to know their neighbors — don’t let that be you! You have no idea how great of a support they can be in a new city, and they can also provide a wealth of knowledge about all of the cool spots to hang out and things to do. And you never know, you might end up having the world’s most awesome neighbors who become your new BFFS. Don’t be afraid to knock on their door and introduce yourself!
2. Book a class.
Group workout classes tend to be filled to the brim with social people. People who love being outside of their homes, experiencing new things and working their bodies to their limits. Class is a great way to not only get a great workout, but to start meeting some new people. After all, you already know that you have a love for fitness in common.
3. Explore your neighborhood and everything it offers.
Take a weekend to play tourist in your new neighborhood. Get lost in the architecture, the museums and the stores and just take some time to peek around. Not only will you become much more acclimated to the area, but you will probably find some great places you’ll want to visit again (and again).
4. Rely on your network….but not too much.
Oh social media, we love you. And moving is a great time to use these networks to your advantage. Reach out to your friends and see if any of them may have relocated nearby or have a person to connect you with who can play tour guide. Use this network that you have built to get some leads on what to do in your new neighborhood, but don’t use it as a crutch for getting out and learning on your own either.
5. Start saying “yes!”
Is everyone from the office going for happy hour after work? Did a high school friend message you and say they made a coffee date for you and someone they know who you will love? Instead of saying no to things that might regularly be outside your comfort zone — say “yes!”
6. Attend an event happening in your area.
Another thing that social media is great for: letting you know about events happening in your area. As soon as you update your location, expect to see all kinds of happenings pop up in your feed. Instead of scrolling past, use this an opportunity to click that “attending” button and attend something local.
7. Start doing some things regularly.
There’s nothing quite like going to the same coffee shop each afternoon or the same spin class each morning to help you to start seeing familiar faces and making new friends. Establishing this routine with yourself will help make you feel so much more at home and a new city will truly feel like it’s yours in no time.
8. Plan things in advance to look forward to.
It can feel pretty crappy when you first move to a new place and you have absolutely nothing on your calendar — so change that! Start booking classes, having friends or neighbors over, hosting a premiere for the latest Netflix binge-worthy show, etc. and get them on your calendar! There’s nothing quite like having something fun to look forward to with new people you’ve met that will make you feel more at home.
