Truth be told, we could all use a mental health day now and again. It’s good for our minds, body and our soul. But, these are often frowned upon in the workplace and not considered actual sick days. Things might be changing though, because this CEO’s email to an employee could really change the way they are perceived.
Madalyn Parker, a web developer and engineer at Olark Live Chat emailed her team to let them know she was taking a few days off to focus on her mental health. She wrote, “Hey team, I’m taking today and tomorrow to focus on my mental health. Hopefully I’ll be back next week refreshed and back to 100 percent.”
She obviously didn’t expect to go viral because of this, but it just goes to show how important her decision was.
Her boss, and Olark founder and CEO Ben Congleton responded in the best way imaginable, “Hey Madalyn, I just wanted to personally thank you for sending emails like this. Every time you do, I use it as a reminder of the importance of using sick days for mental health—I can’t believe this is not standard practice at all organizations. You are an example to us all, and help cut through the stigma so we can all bring our whole selves to work.”
