What Everyone Will Have in Their Gym Bag This Year

No matter when we’re heading to class, packing our workout bags isn’t always easy. That said, we’re constantly looking for ways to make getting to class more convenient so we’re in the zone from warm-up to cool-down, and ready for whatever we run into before or after class.

To pack a workout bag fitness lovers will swear by and sweat with throughout 2017, we chatted with two fitness trendsetters, Kate Lemere, creator of The Four Percent fitness blog, and Lizzie Albert, studio manager at Studio Three in Chicago. Here’s what they predict everyone will be lugging around in their workout bags:

Dove dry spray antiperspirant

“This antiperspirant goes on smoothly and dries quickly (in one second!) and doesn’t leave any trace of deodorant on your clothing,” Lemere says.

The best part about this antiperspirant is the scent truly lasts all day. Full disclosure here: I tested the product, sprayed some on in morning, and forgot to reapply before my work out at Sweat (not a low-intensity workout BTW… eek!). I got a full whiff of myself during triceps extensions and still smelled powdery fresh. I prefer the Original Clean scent, but if you prefer a more masculine scent or are helping a guy friend or partner pack his workout bag, it comes in a Cool Fresh men’s scent that’s not too bad either.

Mermaid leggings

Everyone wanted to be a mermaid in 2016 and we don’t anticipate this changing at all 2017. Take your mermaid vibes from pool side to the studio with these Graced by Grit Mermaid Leggings. They’re high waisted; come in grey, royal blue and pink; and, oh yeah, they’re waterproof. So go ahead and add a paddle board yoga class to your list this year!

Tinted moisturizer

Keeping a facial moisturizer in your workout bag is so important, especially in the winter months to keep your face hydrated and to prioritize your skin care routine on the go. “Peter Thomas Roth tinted moisturizer is the best tinted moisturizer post-workout and in general,” says Lemere. “Trust me, it’s worth the price point, and the fact that is has sunscreen in it is the cherry on top.”

Buy it: Peter Thomas Roth Tinted Moisturizer, $48

Collagen powder

Thanks to Jennifer Aniston, our post-workout smoothies haven’t been quite the same without collagen powder, and Albert agrees. “Collagen powder should go in everything—smoothies and coffee included—to keep your skin youthful and elastic and to boost your metabolism,” she says.

Some studios sell drinks with collagen already in it, or you can buy packets to keep in your workout bag to add to your own drinks.

A light snack

It’s always smart to keep a light snack in your workout bag for days you’re a little bit hungrier than usual or if you’re not able to refuel right after class. Make sure you’re choosing something full of fiber and protein that’s easy to pack and grab on the go. HIPPEAs, organic chickpea puffs, are a solid option and are available at Starbucks, online, and will be soon be at Whole Foods and Amazon. They are certified gluten-free, vegan, kosher, non-GMO and full of flavor.

Stainless steel water bottle

We all know how important is it to hydrate. That’s why Albert recommends owning a stainless steel water bottle and keeping it close by—and full—for workouts. “Stainless steel water bottles are BPA-, BPS- and toxin-free, and keep your drinks hot or cold for hours,” she says.

Stainless steel water bottles can be found anywhere, from your favorite studio to online stores. Just be sure to ask the store manager or read the label to confirm the bottle is 100% stainless steel.

Phone charger

We rarely go anywhere without our phones. How else are we supposed to keep up with Instagram and sign up for class? Which is why having a back-up phone charger is key. Lemere loves all things gold—and so do we.

Dry shampoo

Hiding sweaty hair under a hat is a quick fix for post-workout hair. But for days when you need to quickly style your hair without a shower, or just need to refresh after a lighter workout, keep a reliable dry shampoo in your workout bag. Mineral Fusion Dry Shampoo is a powder-like product that soaks up sweat along your hairline. It’s vegetarian, keratin-enriched, weightless, and you can select the shade best suited for your hair to avoid any grey-looking residue that dry shampoo often leaves behind.

An essential bag

“Any gym bag should include a smaller essentials bag that can be easily transferred from one back to the next and should include the smaller items that are easy to lose, such as bobby pins, hair ties, lip balm and a few dollar bills in case you forget a water bottle and need to buy one,” Lemere says. “This may sound trivial, but with them you’ll always be prepared!”
