Fall is tricky on the hair. Hot air, cold air, building heating systems, air-conditioning, and many other environmental stressors can leave hair feeling fried. Making matters worse? Strands are still recovering from the summer and about to face a lot of dryness going into winter months. So the time to get your hair healthy is now, during the fall.
To help you keep it looking lustrous and strong, try these tricks from professional stylist, Sabrina Michals, director of Global Brand Artistry at Bumble and Bumble.
“Color-safe shampoo is a must if you color your hair,” Michals says. “Without it, your color will fade fast and can become extremely dry.” She recommends Pureology Hydrate for dry or color-treated hair because it “gently cleanses without stripping color because it is a sulfate-free formula with an anti-fade complex. It delivers rich lather while infusing hair with essential hydration.”

“Cut your hair,” Ungaro says. It may seem obvious, but it’s one of the most important things you can do to keep your hair healthy. “Frequent trims are essential if you want your hair to grow, especially after the summer,” she says. “The longer you go without cutting your hair, the higher the split ends grow. If you want to keep your hair longer or have it grow longer, have your stylist ‘dust’ your ends every three months.”
Notice your scalp starting to flake? This happens often during a change in season and is an indicator that you need to change your shampoo, Michals says. As our skin starts to dry out from heat radiators, you need a shampoo that is more moisturizing. She recommends Bumble and Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Shampoo because it’s packed with six nourishing, lightweight oils that moisturize the hair.

Besides moisture, a flaky scalp may benefit from exfoliation. While Bumble and Bumble’s Full Potential collection of products is meant to target breakage in the hair shaft, Michals has fallen in love with it because it actually exfoliates the scalp. Once the scalp is exfoliated, it allows for fresh new growth to come through. Michals also likes adding a few drops of tea tree oil to her hair products because it stimulates the scalp. If you don’t have tea tree oil handy, she recommends a product like Bumble and Bumble Tonic Lotion, which contains tea tree oil and can be used even on days when you’re not washing your hair.

A cold water rinse
“You can tell that hair is a little duller and just thirsty in the the fall and winter months. When you have dryness, you lack shine,” says Michals. She recommends rinsing with cold water after you wash your hair as an easy and free way to add some shine to your strands. The chilly water also invigorates the scalp, making it a great partner to tea tree oil in your hair routine.
Even oily hair types can benefit from using lightweight hair oils, which can be of the fast-absorbing variety, such as argan oil, or they can be hidden in products like shampoos or hair masks. Try doing a rich hair mask, such as PHYTO’s PHYTOELIXIR Intense Nutrition Mask, once or twice a week. This mask contains the fast-absorbing macadamia oil, which is rich in fatty acids to help restore your hair’s barrier to environmental stressors.
