Can Shampoo Really Help With Sweat? We Tested 6 Products For You

There’s a lot of really awesome perks of working out frequently: tone and definition, increased happiness, stronger confidence and of course, more energy. But one of the truths about living a super-active lifestyle is all of that sweat. Regardless of the season, when you consistently hit boxing bags, the TRX or the indoor bike, you’re going to sweat like crazy…

…everywhere. Including your hair.

Post-workout, there’s truly nothing that feels as amazing as a nice long shower that cleanses and refreshes you. But if you want a shampoo that does double-duty to rid of build-up and sweat – along with getting rid of your hair woes – which one is best?

Here’s what happened when we tested TK shampoos for a week that claimed to work just as hard for us in the shower as we do in class:

Amika Triple RX

Tester: Morghan
Hair type: “Very thin and flat. Color-tested regularly. Not curly or wavy. Just limp!”
Hair woe: “I hate that my hair has no volume!”
Washes her hair: Every 1 to 2 days
Favorite classes: Dance and indoor cycling

What happened:

The biggest thing I noticed after just a few days using the shampoo is that my hair was not falling out as much. Previously, I was losing handfuls of hair every time I washed it. It really did start to repair my damaged hair. The shampoo also made my hair so soft and silky, but not greasy. I have super-fine hair and sometimes nourishing or repairing shampoos make my hair greasy looking by the next day. I’ve noticed a serious difference in my hair’s texture and the look of it.”

Would you recommend it?

Yes! It smells great which is always nice after a sweaty workout. It really cleaned my hair without drying it out.”

Colorproof Signature Blonde

Tester: Tatiana
Hair type: “Long, straight and highlighted.”
Hair woe: “My hair can be frizzy without any volume and my color fades pretty quickly.”
Washes her hair: Every other day
Favorite classes: Strength training, high-intensity-interval-training and boot camp.

What happened:

“It definitely helped my blonde stay blonde, without making it fade, and it gave color to my treated hair. Sometimes, my hair can look brassy or dull, and this shampoo really helped me out. It also helped extend life between salon appointments – and trust me, it’s been a while! Another bonus? It had a great, non-cloying scent.”

Would you recommend it?

I’d like to buy this stuff by the jug! And my colorist uses it, so I think that’s 100 percent proof this stuff is the real deal. I would recommend it for all the time, not just post-workout! The directions recommend leaving it on your hair for a bit, so that it can work to it’s fullest, and many people are time-constrained post class. Given that – keep it in mind but I think it does a fabulous job!”

Dear Clark

Tester: Carly
Hair type: “Deep brown, fine, medium-volume and naturally wavy.”
Hair woe: “The ends of my hair are dry and prone to split-ends because it’s the last of the balayage growing out.”
Washes her hair: Every 1 or two days
Favorite classes: Barre, hot yoga and indoor cycling

What happened:

“While I liked that it was all-natural and made from locally-sourced ingredients, it didn’t really do anything for me. It did promise to restore damaged hair, but I didn’t see a noticeable difference.”

Would you recommend it?

I would recommend it for people who like aromatherapy because when used in a steam shower, the scent filled the air like incense. Also, it might be nice for people who have color-treated or damaged hair, since the products don’t have any sulfates or phosphates. For those who like natural products, this is a solid option.

Hair La Vie Revitalize Shampoo

Tester: Rashi
Hair type: “Pretty manageable and wavy, but can get a little frizzy. Tons of volume!”
Hair woe: “During the summer, my hair can be frizzy. During the winter, I definitely have a dry scalp. But when I work out, it gets really oily – fast.”
Washes her hair: 2 to 3 times a week
Favorite classes: Yoga, barre, dance and hot yoga

What happened:

“This shampoo was gentle and it didn’t strip my hair. I liked that it smelled great and wasn’t harsh. But, for an active lifestyle, my hair never really felt as clean as I would have hoped.”

Would you recommend it?

It’s a great shampoo for people who are looking for something gentle. I plan on using it on days I don’t need to wash sweat out of my hair!”

HealthySexyHair Soy Shampoo

Tester: Cate
Hair type: “Straight, blonde, medium volume and oil level. It’s always in a ponytail!”
Hair woe: “It frizzes in the summer with the humidity, but otherwise, it’s just pretty boring and straight. I almost always let it air-dry and it is just sort of… there.”
Washes her hair: Every 1 or 2 days.
Favorite classes: Strength training, high-intensity interval training and hot yoga

What happened:

My hair was definitely ‘thicker’ (i.e. more voluminous), but I feel like this was due to added frizz. My hair was definitely less smooth than it is normally. A big perk for me was that it smelled great, but I really didn’t like how it didn’t lather. At all! I never felt like my hair was that clean.”

Would you recommend it?

I think this might be a more natural shampoo (at least it is branded that way), so it may be good for people that value that highly, but it’s not necessarily something that I look for when choosing a shampoo. Maybe this shampoo would work well if I was styling or straightening my hair, but I just don’t do that on a regular basis.”

Infusium 23

Tester: Jina
Hair type: “Dark brown, kinky coils, curly and fine.”
Hair woe: “My hair can be very dry and I shed a whole lot.”
Washes her hair: Once a week
Favorite classes: Dance

What happened:

I noticed that since using the shampoo I haven’t been been shedding a lot. I also liked how great it smelled. Though I don’t use conditioner, I would say that most girls would enjoy using the shampoo and conditioner combo.”

Would you recommend it?

“I would recommend it because it has great cleansing power. I use oils in my hair daily and every time I wash my hair with this shampoo, it is clean in minutes. I just didn’t like that it had sulfates.”

Schwarzkopf Essence Ultime – Frizz Control and Protect

Tester: Shari
Hair type: “Wavy, thick, brown and awesome. It air dries well but can get frizzy.”
Hair woe: “I have trouble with frizz control and sometimes, it can just be blah.”
Washes her hair: More than once a day
Favorite classes: Strength-training, HIIT, boxing and bootcamp

What happened:

It left my hair shiny without weighing it down. I was able to do my usual wash-and-go after class, but without the frizz! My hair also felt softer and less frizzy after using it for a couple of weeks in a row.”

Would you recommend it?

“Generally I like to use all-natural formulas, but this may be worth using every once in a while to keep my frizz in check. It would work for ladies like me with wavy hair — especially the low-maintenance ones that prefer to skip the blow drier. This will definitely get a spot in my summertime rotation to help me fight the NYC heat!”
