The mornings are finally getting lighter and the idea of lacing up your trainers and hitting the streets might not fill you with quite so much dread. Take advantage of this mindset and sign yourself and some friends up for a fun run in the coming months.
Racing doesn’t always have to be a serious affair, there are plenty of options for every level (and competitive personality) from obstacle courses and colorful 5Ks to fancy dress runs. Take a peek at our faves in London and the surrounding areas.
Grab some friends and we’ll see you at the start line:
The original women-only fun run, these 5Ks takes place across the UK throughout the summer months. Perfect for beginners, power walkers and big groups of girls, you’ll be supporting a very worthy cause while working out. New distances added last year include 10ks, a half-marathon and full marathon in October.
Part of the Race for Life family, these muddy runs are the perfect foray into obstacle courses for all abilities, with maximum distances of 10k. Expect to laugh a lot, and come home covered in mud!
A bit like the Holi festival, but wearing sports gear and running through the paint as you loop around Wembley Stadium. It may not be the most picturesque of settings but you can be assured you will get some brilliant post-race pics at the dance party.
Run (or waddle) around Battersea Park in an inflatable sumo outfit, it’s what dreams are made of, right? There’s guaranteed to be a lot of laughter, but probably not many PBs on the course!
Streak for Tigers is the race for those brave enough to bare it all. Run around London Zoo at night wearing nothing but a pair of trainers and a Tiger mask.
Britain’s version of the Marathon de Medoc, enjoy wine tasting at aid stations as you wind your way 13.1 (or 26.2) miles around the Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey, all while in your wackiest fancy dress.
Getting the tube to the starting line for this race might garner a few stares as you take to the streets of London wearing a Gorilla suit. This 5-miler is definitely one to rope your friends into running or walking with you.
Warning: this one isn’t for the faint of heart. Run for your life around the 5km obstacle course while avoiding the Zombie horde trying to hunt you down. For those more interested in scaring than being scared, there are applications to join the Zombie team too.
