While the biggest reason for working out is arguably staying in shape, the next biggest reason for me, is stress relief. I run my own business and my day-to-day life can get pretty crazy, so finding time to workout is sometimes, okay, a lot of the time, really hard. And to be honest, there are many days that a glass of wine sounds better than a workout class.
But the thing is, the days I’m able to withstand the booze cravings and go workout are something I never regret. One thing that’s easy for me to forget is how beneficial exercise is to my mental health as well as my physical health. It seems like after a tough barre class or sweaty hot yoga session all my worries of getting things done disappear. Well, they’re still there, but my concern about getting them done by a certain time fades away and I’m able to see my situation with fresh eyes. Essentially, it just puts things in perspective, and that peace of mind is truly priceless.
I also find that working out not only reduces my stress, but it gives me more energy and excitement going into work the next day. It really is powerful what exercise can do for your mind and your personal happiness.
One of my resolutions this year is not to just workout more, but to remember how much better I feel about working out so that I’m more motivated to go. How does exercise help you manage stress in your life? How are you going to make the choice to step away from the wine glass… and sign-up for a class instead?
